Bug Description

My screen randomly rotates 90 degrees clockwise without warning. It has happened twice so far, once was yesterday after I installed UG 17.04, and once today. The first time was when I was still getting my system setup for myself after install, and the second time was while I had left the system unattended for an extended period of time.

For me, it's counterclockwise. I tried setting the "lock rotation" option referenced in https://askubuntu.com/questions/874487/ubuntu-gnome-16-10-screen-orientation-spontaneously-changes (had to switch to Unity 8 to find it), but it didn't make a difference when I logged back in under Cinnamon, the windowing environment I usually use.

That happens to me also on Ubuntu Gnome 17.04. It's not random though but rather when the screen shuts off after I leave the computer inactive. When I turn the screen back on, it's 90 degrees clockwise (and quite puzzling to get the mouse working to be able to reboot because of muscle memory).

Today I grabbed the daily build of 17.10 and booted into it from a USB drive. It still rotates--but at times I can't predict, the screen will blank out and then come back rotated. (Should I create a new bug for 17.10?) I should mention that this happens on my laptop, an HP Pavilion with AMD graphics. On my desktop, which has an Nvidia 960, it doesn't.
