Exporting a single element to PDF from command line produces a blank file

I have an svg file with two groups. When trying from command line to export any of them I get a blank PDF file (so I can load it with okular, but there is nothing inside). The command I am using to export such element (and the output reported by inkscape) is:

$ inkscape -i <element_id> -D -A <output_fname.pdf> <input_file.svg>

(process:27923): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
        Using the fallback 'C' locale.

However, if I run the same command leaving out the -D (so the exported area is the whole page), the export works: I get only the group I requested, but on a full blank page (:S).

The version of inkscape I am using now is 0.92.1-r, and the operating system is an up-to-date Arch Linux.
