Bug Description

This error occurred at the final stages of installing updates.
I had run
sudo apt-get update
followed by
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This seems to happen in one form or another periodically.
The fix is to run
sudo apt-get -f install
until it doesn't fail. Sometimes once, in this case 5 or 6 times.
Eventually, the install finished without errors, and then I restart, and everything tends to be ok.

It seems that running it until it fixes the broken dependencies is just a normal part of updating?

I've checked my drives for any signs of issues, and the smart utilities show no problems.
If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know what it is, and I'll try and fix it.

Are you running any virus scanner like Sophos? I had the same issue (the file that failed was different each time).

I disabled sophos by running
# sudo /opt/sophos-av/bin/savdctl disable

before running apt.

This is an unsupported release now. Please think to install the next LTS 'Bionic 18.04'

Marking as Invalid because the release is EOL is not correct. Marking as Incomplete. Also, 18.04 is (at the time of writing) still in development, and you should expect some breakage.

Reporter, is this still present on 17.10 or 16.04?
