Bug Description

I'm able to do all the various font tweaks like ctrl-b
or alt->, but when I move the cursor between two
letters I can't get kern to work by doing
alt-up/down/left or right. This also includes using
alt-shift direction to jump by 10.

Kerning not working in flowtext is a limitation of the
current draft of SVG 1.2. The authors are planning to change
that. So I'm leaving this open, though it may be quite some
time before a new specification is ready and Inkscape is
changed to follow it.

It's maybe more of a usability-issue. I (accidently) created
a flow-test instead of a "normal" Text, and spent an hour
trying to figure out ehy the kerning wouldn't work.

Since Alt+Arrow is not used in any other way, maybe a flash
in the status-line when trying to change the kerning of
flowtext would help.

We could just make it work, of course. Since flowroot is never
going to be a part of any Recommendation, it doesn't really
matter what we do with it.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Inkscape better. You reported this bug a long while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Inkscape release? Thanks in advance

This is still a problem. At least give a warning when the user tries to use Alt-arrow on flowed text. Just waisted an hour to figure out why manual kerning seemed to have stopped working.

I think that just adding a short warning in the status bar would suffice.

"Type or edit flowed text (x characters); press Enter to start a new paragraph. Manual Kerning is not allowed."

Of course it would be better to support kerning on flowed text, but at least adding that to the status bar would notify the limitation without the need of a modal box, coding a flashing or something like that)
