Files opened from the sidebar don't always open

Bug Description
David Hewitt and I are both experiencing this issue. Sometimes when you click a file in the folder sidebar, it does not open.

I'm not sure how to trigger it exactly, but I'm kind of thinking it has something to do with the split view. My theory is that it was opening the file in a view that is not realized. The most recent change to the split view seems to be in rev 1786 so I guess seeing if we can reproduce the issue in that rev is a good starting point
A workaround I found is making sure you focus the current view before trying to open a file.
