Bug Description
The discussion around [1] makes it clear that the networking guide currently lacks content for hybrid-style deployments that allow instances to be booted on both external and self-service networks.
The amount of work required to add this content seems out of scope of the original bug report, so I'm closing it in favor of this one.
See the original discussion, particularly [2] for details of the new content required.
