italics markup converts to bold when using too many exclamation points

Bug Description
When converting text file to an ebook the *markup* for italics gets converted to bold instead of italics. I've narrowed down the cause to - of all things - using more than two exclamation points in a row. Seems crazy, but by limiting my text to only two exclamation points in a row it has fixed the issue.
I haven't done any more sleuthing than that, it's driven me crazy.
Running Windows
version 2.77
I'd rather not send the files...

Using which markup system? And attach a file that demonstrates the
problem, you dont want to attach the original file, then attacha
minimal sample.
