Bug Description

Using Mail version Version: 1.0.4+r2194+pkg13~ubuntu16.04.1.

Many email clients include copies of previous messages in replies sent, for ease of reading previous messages in a thread in clients without threaded message display.

There is no option or apparent way to have Mail collapse quoted messages from previous emails in the thread. With long emails, this can lead to individual messages requiring very long scrolls to get from the beginning to the end. This is especially problematic if one receives two or more replies to the same thread before reading mail, as the new content will be buried in the middle of long sections of quoted text, making catching up on new mail very difficult and time consuming. Many other clients (Such as the Gmail web client) automatically collapse quoted text when displaying messages, with options for expanding it per-message.

Not sure how this would be implemented on a technical level, but I agree it's a handy feature that web clients like Gmail have.

Mail does already display the quoted text indented and typically with a line at the start of the quote. Maybe checking for that?

Sure, but this is inside of a WebKitGTK view, so we'd have to inject some HTML/CSS/JS into the message view. Which makes it technically much more complex than it would appear on the surface.
