Bug Description

if it is the problem i think it is.

it can be solved like this:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/280440/grub-and-lilo-both-fail-to-install-to-nvme-hard-disk-when-installing-debian

also a root terminal option in the installer to fix the situation would be a great help.

The driver/firmware for the latest 'nvme' solid state drives is not in the live dvd.
I have found a workaround to install lubuntu on my system:

booted from the live dvd
ran "Software Updater" from the menu
ran the installer again.

that worked for me.
Lubuntu works like a charm now!

I think its obvious, but for those who don't think :-)
Don't reboot after the update!

No; there are no additional drivers needed nor installed by update for nvme. Lubuntu EFI installs simply seem to be broken in 16.10.
