Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for getting back.

This is an almost clean installation of Xubuntu 16.04. I believe that after installation of Xubuntu, the system asked me to update some programs and I did so. I did not notice this bug before those updates, but I didn't test for it either. So I'm not sure if this started to happen after an update, sorry. Maybe I should try a clean install and test the back-light controls before any update?

I will now test the kernel that you suggest and report the results.

Thanks.

Tested latest v4.9 kernel, as suggested by Joseph Salisbury. The bug remains exactly the same:
Backlight control does not work and there are no entries in /sys/class/backlight

Apart from that, this kernel makes the PC run slow (at least, a big latency is observed on the screen when typing on moving the mouse). This might not be related to the backlight bug , but I will uninstal the upstream kernel if no more testing is needed with it.

Thanks.

1) To clarify the Bug Description, what other linux distributions did you use specifically (ex. vendor, kernel version, etc.)?
2) Was a WORKAROUND identified following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight ?
