Not able to import .ttf fonts into Tweak Tool

I have put the fonts in both ~/.fonts and /usr/share/local/fonts/my_fonts. Also I have tried changing the permissions so that everyone can read, but only root can read and write. I have also updated the font cache using sudo fc-cache -fv and in the logging that it does to terminal it said that it found the fonts in the ~/.fonts folder.
Still the fonts that I am trying to use do not show up in the unity tweak tool. If it helps I am trying to use these fonts (https://github.com/jpandino/YosemiteSanFranciscoFont). I have done this before so I know it can be done but I am not able to get it to work.
