Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

The driver(s?) for the 4xxx series of HP OfficeJet printers have the following problem: Printout mode can use either the color or the black cartridge, never both. If one needs to use both cartridges, he is to bypass printout and choose in the detailed field below "resolution, quality, ink type, media type" the proper detailed mode.

No one should use only the color cartridge to print in color mode.

I checked the following drivers, and all of them have this issue:

OfficeJet 4100
4105
4110
4115
4200
4300

All of the above, using only the recommended option (foomatic/hpijs).

I also checked drivers for some non 4xxx series (5100, some 6xxx and some 7xxx, for example) and none of those has this problem, so this is 4xxx specific.

I have reported this problem to the HPLIP developers at HP. It originates in the case that some printers of the type of your printer were sold only with the CMY color cartridge and without black cartridge. The solution will be to distinguish more detailed between printer models when assigning the default settings.

I have this problem on a PSC 1210 as well in hardy 8.04.1.

Do you have a link for checking up on the hplip bug report?

Any news on a solution?

Can please anyone at HP do the following changes:

Devide up the LIDIL printers in devices which are (were) delivered with a color and a black cartridge and devices which are (were) delivered with only the CMY color cartridge.

In the former category (comes always with 2 cartridges) let the PrintoutMode settings be coupled with two-cartridge CMYK modes, so that the default mode and the principally used ones are CMYK. In the latter category (were also sold with only the CMY cartridge) leave the modes as they currently are.

I have an HP PSC 1315v and no matter the mode I select in the "Printout Mode" heading (eg. 300dpi, black + color, photo paper), it seems that the selection in the "General" heading of Printout Mode takes precedence, and the only listings there are either black or color cart, but not both. This makes the printer useless in Linux. I've had this problem in Ubunut 8.04 (HPLIP 2.8.x) and now in Ubuntu 9.04 (HPLIP 3.9.x).

Felipe Figueiredo, is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 164707

Christopher,

I can't test it. I don't own this printer anymore, and haven't for quite a few years.
