Bug Description

I have an external monitor attached to my laptop and am using a ThinkPad OneLink+ docking station.

I repeatedly have issues where if I lock the screen and unlock it, windows return to the incorrect window (my laptop window). I also have crossed out icons (red circle with a line through it) for several of my icons in the upper left corner of the screen in the toolbar).

I see the following in the kern.log:

Nov 29 15:00:11 rob-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th kernel: [20756.881080] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I've seen this same issue on another laptop (Dell m3800) and was hoping it was hardware related but it's not apparently. I believe it's related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1550779.

I will attempt to test the upstream kernel but before I do are there any instructions for reverting back once the test is complete?

Kevin (kevinhaefeli), it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
