Bug Description

The laptop Clevo P650RS has a Synaptics touchpad but it is not detected by the kernel 4.8.0-27 on Ubuntu 16.10. There is no entry in /proc/bus/input/devices matching it. I installed Windows to check if it works at all, and it does. Windows identifies it as ACPI/SYN1219.

WORKAROUND: Use kernel boot parameter:
i8042.reset

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

It is not after any update/upgrade. It is a new hardware.
I tested the 4.9 RC7, nothing has changes. Still not any mouse in /proc/bus/input/devices.

The workaround is to set i8042.reset boot option

Paweł Bylica, to keep this relevant to upstream, one would want to periodically check for, and test the latest mainline kernel (now 4.9) as it is released.

Could you please advise?

I have the same issue on a Metabox P650-RP (re-badged Clevo), Ubuntu 16.10, kernel 4.8.0-46. Adding i8042.reset to my kernel command line fixed it for me also. I'm currently upgrading to 17.04 so I'll see if the problem persists in the new kernel.

Problem persists in 17.04, kernel 4.10.0-19. Workaround is still effective though.

@Ed

Can you attach the dmistring of your machine? We can make the workaround into kernel itself.
