Distortion from "Pattern Along Path" is not predictable by curvature

Bug Description
See the attached example image. On the top panel I have used the path effect to apply a (repeated) pattern along the path. The deformation appears on one side, not the other, even though the path itself is symmetrical. That means it is not a simple function of the path's curvature, as would be intuitive.
The same effect isn't seen using the extension with the same settings and deformation type "snake".
This is using Inkscape 0.91 installed via the package version 0.91.0+
