This is a big problem with amdgpu on the Carrizo card. The screen just goes black, and I am unable to get it to do otherwise, even after rebooting. Using nomodeset as a kernel parameter during grub boot-up allows me to boot it up in low-graphics mode.

I do not have this issue in Ubuntu 14.04, since Ubuntu 14.04 still allows users to install fglrx/Catalyst, which works perfectly with Carrizo. But support for that package has been dropped in later installments of Ubuntu.

Are you sure the black screens are your only problem?

I have problems with keyboard missing keypresses, touchpad doing strange stuff, hard drive performance, random crashes and caps-lock blinks, wifi required driver from github and manual setting of antenna. I ran sysbench and disk was performing at about 1.3mb/s speed only! There was at least 1 other person who wrote to my bug report that he was having the same problems.

With 4.8 hwe kernel, it does not even boot anymore. Looking at all the bug reports, the problems seem to be only getting worse and worse with updates. It is almost like linux is trying to irradicate AMD machines...

Here is my bug report for the hard drive performance, are you able to replicate it?

Sorry Evren, my only issue is with this 'blank screen' error. HD speed tested with HDPARM and it looks fine. Also did not notice any problem with keyboard, or touchpad. WiFi installation was smooth. Current version of the kernel is 4.4.0-66-generic. Updating did not get things worse. Nor better in the case of the black screen bug.

I read your posts on bug #1616830, and let's hope AMD and Canonical work towards a solution together.

V.

victor gaspar, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

1) Could you please provide the full computer model as noted on the sticker of the computer itself (not from the Bug Description, or the result of a terminal command)?

2) To see if this is resolved in your release, could you please update your HWE stack as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack and advise to the results?

3) Could you please advise if any one (not in combination) of the following kernel parameters allow you to boot:
nomodeset
radeon.dpm=0
radeon.bapm=0
radeon.bapm=1

Hi Christopher,

1) This one was hard... I needed a magnifying glass to get the info:
HP Pavilion Notebook PC
ProdID: V7R89LA#ABM
Model 14-av005Ia

2) Update done using command:
   sudo apt-get install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04
Same results, black screen. In fact, after the update, it never starts correctly again :S

3) I tried with the four options. None worked.

1) Could you please post the missing information from a bad boot following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelBoot ?

2) To clarify, when booting up and using GRUB to boot into an older kernel, would this return to the previous behavior?

3) Regarding the suggested four kernel parameters, are you advising you tested each one individually (not in combination) and it had no affect?
