I am using a Dell Optiplex 760 and had a similar problem in 17.04 where sound wouldn't play until I played around with (to me) arcane command line input in terminal. I was hoping that upgrading to 17.10 would fix it but it hasn't... Is this a problem with Dell machines or is this a general problem with the last two Ubuntu releases? Thank you for any additional info.

Updated to 17.10 and pasystray doesn't start. On console reports core segment violation.
