I can confirm this report. I had reported a similar problem with applets disappearing from the panel. Unfortunately I can't remember the bug #.

I think I can shed a little light on this problem. After a clean install of Ubuntu 7.04 I went for several weeks without the problem.

After a clean install of Ubuntu 7.10 I went about a week without problems. Today I decided to install the restricted driver for the ATI radeon mobility 9600. That is when the problem appeared. The error message just before the disappearing applets was "expected something got string"

After uninstalling the restricted driver I can't reproduce the error.

After reinstalling the restricted driver I can consistently reproduce the error.

Perhaps there should be a stronger warning on the restricted driver.

So I've duplicated the problem reported by Pedro Villavicencio. My solution is to disable the protected driver.

I'm running an ATI Radeon Mobility 9200, but with the default driver (not the restricted driver). Never used the restricted driver. Will try to get a backtrace.

I've since had it happen once without the restricted driver. I was fooling with mixing other window managers and gnome panel.

I am convinced that the program is trying to redraw the screen for the
new or changed applet. At the same time it is getting ready to write the
new settings to a file. If a graphics error occurs it fails and neither
the old or the new settings are saved.

Tried to get a backtrace, but no luck. The problem is that once you attach gdb to the disk mounter process and then log out, the process is killed as part of the logout and a new one started upon login. However, gdb is not attached to the new one, which is the one we actually want to backtrace.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.
