Bug Description

Symptoms
--------
Suspend seems to work.
Resume only works while not on battery.

This used to work before some recent kernel update.
However trying some of the older kernels now does not fix the problem: the symptoms are the same.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.4 stable kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Also, does this issue go away if you boot back into the previous kernel version?

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for writing back.
I did try with switching between upstream 4.8.0 and 4.8.6 and back, neither fixed it.
However once I booted into my old 3.19 kernel the symptom went away.I may also add that the laptop had been shut down beforehand for a good number of hours (not plugged in).

Any explanation for that?

Hi again,

Not sure how related, but when I plug in a HDMI device the system hangs if and only if I'm on battery.

Update:

I noticed that after the system hangs (e.g. plugging in a HDMI device while on battery), upon subsequent restarts the system fails to resume on battery, no matter what kernel I load.

Once I fully shutdown and cold start, resume starts to work.
As if it has to do with some internal state loaded on warm boot?
