autosave freezes editor and loses keystrokes

The very useful autosave feature that runs every five minutes locks up the editor when it runs, and when it happens, any keystrokes typed during the interval are lost.

Such that when typing the following (for example) :
abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

If autosave runs during that interval, here is an example of what ends up being processed :
abcdefghpqrstuvwxyz

As is obvious, keystrokes for "ijklmno" are lost.
This happens every time.

I am not sure if this is specific to gedit, or to the input framework I am using (IBus, and at times Anthy for Japanese input)

This is quite annoying as it forces me to re-read absolutely everything I typed to make sure gedit did not miss anything.

I've had the same problem since I first started using Gedit regularly. I have the auto-save function set to every 1 minutes so the UI locking up can be very irritating.

I've had this problem with Gedit on Ubuntu and Linux Mint. I've also had this same problem with Xed, so, that implies that this is an old bug hidden deep within the Xed and Gedit shared code.

I hope this gets fixed -- I have auto-save enabled in Notepad++ on a Windows install and it doesn't suffer from this problem.

I also have to mention that the larger the text file the longer the UI locks up and drops characters which can be a very frustrating problem for very large text files.

Ubuntu 15.10 (wily) reached end-of-life on July 28, 2016.
