Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

I was helping a beginner with his Feisty system. I kept getting a temporary file creation error from gpg regarding some bizarre URL when I tried to add a repo using apt-key. It took a while before I noticed the rather obvious problem - his hostname was a URL and gpg uses the hostname in the file name. I suspect he misunderstood the purpose of the hostname box in network-admin and entered the URL to his ISP. Apparently the app doesn't check an entered hostname for blatantly invalid names like "http://hostname.com".

May you tell us a few steps to trigger the bug?

System > Administration > Network. Under General tab set hostname to "http://hostname.com" then Close and reboot. Then add a key using apt-key like the Wine deb repository (http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb). Result - GnuPG fails to add the key due to a temporary file creation problem (probably because of the // in the hostname).

The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed release. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/

Still allows any type of garbage to be entered. Used Alpha 5 LiveCD with gnome-system-tools updated to 2.21.95-0ubuntu1. /etc/hostname ends up with "http://ubuntu.com". See attached screenshot.
