DVD/CDRW drive doesn't recognize any dvd disks (data DVD and video DVD)

Bug Description

The DVD/CDRW drive works fine with CDROM reading and writing but cannot read any
DVD disks, no matter data DVD or video DVD. It seems that the system just cannot
mount the DVD device. After inserting a DVD disk, there is no response in dmesg.

OS: Ubuntu 5.04
Kernel: 2.6.10-5-686
Hardware: IBM Thinkpad T40, UJDA745 DVD/CDRW

Hmm. Resurrecting this bug, sorry ;)

CD Reading OK, can't verify CD writing (no CD-Rs or CD-RWs here!).
But the DVD's (DVD, DVD+RW) just won't mount.
Everything worked fine yesterday. I've listened to two DVDs. I've listened to a CD. I've put back one of the two DVDs in the drive: nothing.
I've tried another DVD and nothing too. The DVDs were not mounting. Rebooting haven't solved anything, ubuntu is still acting like there's *no* DVD in the drive.

The "sudo mount" command in the terminal just freezes. "sudo eject" too. So, briefly: Ubuntu just ate my Rammstein DVD.

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) on a P3 866.
My CD/DVD drive is a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B

~$ uname -a
Linux A99-LeDechaine 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

The DVD drive worked flawlessly under windows for 3-4 years (or even more).
The DVD disk is a brand new DVD I bought 3-4 days ago.
So I guess the problem is in Ubuntu.

Okay, more info:
"mount /dev/cdrom", when a DVD is inserted, tells me that there's nothing in the drive.
"mount /dev/cdrom", when I've *just* inserted the DVD and the DVD is still turning in the drive, freezes.
After this, ejecting it (by pressing the eject button *on* the drive), floods this in /var/log/messages:

Nevermind, finally, my CD/DVD drive is dead. Sorry.

Weird coincidence that it scrapped just after installing libdvdcss, when everything was finally working right, though..
(And that CDs could be read at the time!)
