iMac built in microphone does not record any sound

Bug Description

The built-in microphone in my Intel iMac does not record sound with any program that I have tried (sound recorder and jokosher).

I don't think this is a duplicate of that other bug, since this bug does not relate to a specific program. The other bug only relates to gnome-sound-recorder, while this one seems to affect all programs (or the microphone itself).
