Bug Description

I have tried to install JeOS 7.10 i386 onto a VirtualBox virtual machine but the installer fails to install the base system. It stops at 73% when it says the current action is "Creating device files". The VM is configured with an IDE hard disk and the CDROM is mounted from the downloaded iso image. I have checked the MD5 sum of the cd image and it matches the published one. What further information can I provide to help diagnose this?

Maybe list some more of the VirtualBox settings you used; how much RAM did you allocate to the "base memory"?

What was your host OS? Did you use the OSE version (e.g. from Ubuntu repos) or did you use the PUEL version from the VirtualBox website?

How long did you let it sit and what are the specs on that computer? Some of the install steps are *slow* and don't seem to indicate progress when it actually is, just very slowly. Maybe try letting it run overnight?

I'm using the PUEL VirtualBox (not OSE) also on an Ubuntu Gutsy host. It was installed from the VBox Gutsy repo. The host machine is a mobile Pentium4 with 1GB RAM. The VM was configured with 128MB base memory, 8MB video memory, ACPI enabled and IO APIC disabled, with NAT networking.

I should have been more specific, I was getting an error message from the installer rather than it seemingly freezing. I can't remember what the message was so I re-ran the install today but something must have changed because it's working now. I think when it failed previously I had chosen to use LVM rather than traditional partitioning. I've also given the VM 256MB allocated RAM which may also be a factor - what are the minimum requirements for a JeOS install?

Definitely LVM related.

Installing on VMWare server 1.0.4 also fails during install of base system if LVM is requested in partitioning step.

LVM is present in the seed but not in the package list. Fixed in 8.04 according to soren

jeos 8.04 alpha 3 fails to install for me. I requested LVM

the console says "E: Couldn't find package lvm2".
Alpha 3 was released a month after the "fixed in 8.04" comment above.
So it doesn't seem quite fixed yet after all?

Oh, and the failure is at 73%, just as mentioned above.

Whew. For a while there, I thought this bug wasn't going to get any attention before Hardy.

If you're curious, here's a full recipe of how to generate a VMWare image
for jeos, listing the three bugs I had to work around. It'd be nice if
Hardy didn't have those three bugs.

The LVM problem seems to be fixed in JeOS Hardy beta (in KVM at least). Could you please confirms that it now works for you?

Confirmed, choosing LVM works for me installing JeOS Hardy release as a guest in VirtualBox 1.6.0r30421 and VMware Workstation 6.0.3 build-80004.
