It happened as well with Ubuntu 16.10 installer. I've figured it out, that the error is most probably caused by on the hard drive installed Windows 7 (in legacy mode) and the installer started automatically in UEFI mode. Although there is a warning about this, would not it be still possible to create an EFI partition anyway?
