Bug Description

Hewlett Packard nx7400 fails to properly wake up after suspend to RAM. I am running Gutsy with daily updates as of 16 November, 2007.

After suspend, the hard disc spins up, but the screen appears blank.

One workarround is to press any button on the keyboard (i'm using left arrow). After each press the system seems to awake for a few seconds. So, to complete the resume from suspend, I have to hold down any key for a couple of seconds, and repeat this some 4-5 times. It then wakes up, but is in kind of bad state. Keyboard events are delayed by ~1 second. To shutdown/restart/suspend the system, one needs to hold any key again to make any progress. The only thing which helps is a full shutdown, after which keyboard and shutdown/restart function correctly until the next time I try to suspend to RAM.

uname -a:
Linux john-laptop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

dmesg.txt (obtained after resume, laptop suspended with "sync; echo > /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force", resumed by holding down left arrow on the keyboard)

This seems to be a regression from Feisty. Resuming from suspend worked fine in that release (assuming a workaround for bug #23497) but fails randomly (perhaps 1/3 of the time) on Gutsy.

I also tried to manually compile the latest kernel (2.6.23.something with the latest prepatch). Resume then works better (the above-mentioned keydown fix required only sometimes), but the laptop always hangs on shutdown.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released. Alpha2 and subsequent releases contain an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . Please note that Alpha3 will be released within the next day or two so you may want to wait. You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Also note you can only test Suspend from the LiveCD, not Hibernate. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

I've opened a new task against the actively developed kernel and am closing the task against linux-source-2.6.22. Thanks!

I have tested suspend with Hardy Alpha 3 LiveCD. There are no improvements, it's actually a little worse: now it won't wake up with or without pressing any keys on the keyboard.

Hi John,

Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for testing and the feedback. Alpha4 is about to be released, it would be good if you could test once more with this newer release. If the issue still exists, the following wiki may help: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend . It would be good if you could attach your dmesg output after having done a suspend and resume cycle as described in that wiki. Thanks.

John and others,

Does this issue also occur to you randomly or consistently every time you try to resume from suspend? At least on gutsy it seems to happen quite randomly on my nx7400. I haven't tested with newer releases but might try with a live CD once I get my hands on Alpha 4.

We might have different problems if yours happens every time.

I have installed Hardy Alpha 4, the problem now happens randomly. From 5 suspends, 2 were successull without any additional help, but 3 others required to hold down a keyboard button (as in Gutsy). It is worth noting that if I do not press any key, the system will sometimes come out of suspend of it's own, but it takes ~ 2-3 minutes. In Gutsy the problem with resume happened every single time, at least for me.

I am 100% sure if anything has actually changed since I tested Alpha 3 Live CD, but Alpha 4 is fully installed version.

Leann, do you still need that dmesg? It now functions in a similiar way as in Gutsy (Gutsy's log is at the first post)

Hi John,

Against the newer Hardy Alpha4 kernel, if you could attach your dmesg after a failed suspend/resume cycle as outlined here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend it would be helpful. Thanks!

After I executed "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force" as a root, the system did not go into suspend, but hanged instead. The power led remained on instead of blinking as expected. I switched the system off, then turned back on and captured dmesg.log

Please let me know if you need any other logs/info.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
