laptop doesn't come back from suspend

Linux Mint 18 Cinnamon 64 bit version 3.0.7
Kernel 4.4.0-21-generic
CPU AMD A6-6310
Graphics Card AMD Mullins [Radeon R4/R5]
Laptop suspends when the lid is closed. I can't tell if the machine is locked or simply not firing up the screen. Recently upgraded from Mint 17 where this wasn't an issue. I have to hold the power button and force a restart.
As a side note, pulseaudio doesn't autostart. It wasn't in the RC after the update.
