Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic

On Feisty (linux kernel 2.6.20) all works good, but when i had install Gutsy the CPU works in a abnormal mode:
1) CPU load is at 100%
2) If I execute TOP, none processes use the CPU over 2-3%
3) The temperature doesn't go hover 37° (Thermal 1: ok, 37.0 degrees C)
4) The fan start at the max speed and doesn't stop.
5) All programs works slowly

I stamp dmesg when the fan start works at max speed

wow I have the same laptop and same identical problem, fan starts sometimes without a reason and sometimes during boot...

I add that I had no problem with Feisty and now with Gutsy I have this problem.
Top doesn't show the process that causes this, but with a superkaramba theme I can see that the cpu goes at 100%

The bad thing is very difficult to understand which is the exact component that causes this problem.

Compiled vanilla kernel 2.6.23.1 and the bug is gone, so yes seems a bug in the ubuntu 2.6.22-14 kernel, acpi probably? Who knows...

The Hardy Heron Alpha2 release will be coming out soon. It will have an updated version of the kernel. It would be great if you could test with this new release and verify if this issue still exists. I'll be sure to update this report when Alpha2 is available. Thanks!

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!

Hi All,

Thanks for testing and the updates. I'm glad to hear things are working with the newer kernel. I'm going to close this report for now. Please reopen if you notice any regression. Also continue to report and future bugs you may find, it's very much appreciated. Thanks!
