Bug Description
This error is logged :
systemd-udevd[409]: Process '/usr/sbin/alsactl -E HOME=/run/alsa restore 1' failed with exit code 99
note: sound works as expected when the GS session is opened
oem@u64:~$ which alsactl
/usr/sbin/alsactl
oem@u64:~$ df -h /usr/sbin/alsactl
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb4 18G 11G 6.5G 62% /
oem@u64:~$ df -h /run/alsa
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
tmpfs 396M 12M 385M 3% /run
(/run/alsa does not exist but /run/alsa/ which is an empty subdir)
From /usr/sbin/alsactl restore (without 'sudo'):
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC882" "HDA:10ec0882,
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Nvidia GPU 60 HDMI/DP" "HDA:10de0060,
Hardware is initialized using a generic method
Looks like that "Nvidia GPU ..." is detected but not identified by alsactl (so the 99 exit code)
"init tries to initialize all devices to a default state. If device is not known, error code 99 is returned." http://
oem@u64:~$ sudo /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
[sudo] password for oem:
oem@u64:~$
that command works: volume is set back to 50% from 100% initialy

Some changelog details might be related:
alsa-utils (1.1.2-1ubuntu1) yakkety; urgency=low
- Move init script volume settings to new alsactl database
- Put the daemon file in /var/lib/alsa
- Create /run/alsa directory so that systemd services don't fail
(/run/alsa is missing & /run/alsa/ is empty)
* Drop upstart files, Debian doesn't carry them, and we use systemd for
init
