This happened for me after an update from Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.

I fixed it by:

* Purging nautilus with apt-get
* Removing ~/.config/nautilus

I suspect the last step may fix it alone but I've not been able to recreate the initial issue to verify.

I had the issue after upgrade from 16.04 even after all updates.
I only did the following to solve it:

* Removing ~/.config/nautilus

Same issue here, upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10, the desktop was blank, and Nautilus wouldn't launch.

Solved by $ sudo rm -rf ~/.config/nautilus $

Removing the directory .config/nautilus worked for me too. The directory is then re-created immediately nautilus is started.

Same here: I solved the issue #4 described, by following instructions in #5.
Thanks to you all.

I am still having problems.

I tried removing, purging & reinstalling Nautilus; no joy.

Then I found this bug and tried:

 * Removing ~/.config/nautilus

This worked. I have desktop icons again and a file manager. However, Nautilus has just one menu, titled "Files", and it contains no entries. A small narrow blank rectangle appears, nothing else.

I remove ~/.config/nautilus ,did not function.
Then rm -rf /usr/lib/nautilus/ ;sudo apt-get install nautilus --reinstall
now can open nautilus.
