emacs21 and a lot of its dependents like cedet and jde failed on the upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10

I get the same problem each time I upgrade Emacs. It happened again with today's Emacs security update from
version 22.1-0ubuntu5 to version 22.1-0ubuntu5.1. Purging jde solves the problem.
