Aki Vehtari, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

To clarify, is there a crash file in /var/crash?

If not, could you please capture the crash following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSystemCrash ?

There are some files in /var/crash, but the date is older than when I last time reproduced the bug so I guess they are not releated (easily reproduced, but I have been avoiding to do it intentionally as I need to use this computer for work).

This affects me too on Mint 18 with Cinnamon. I'm using the modesetting DDX driver instead of xserver-xorg-video-intel. If there's anything I can do to help gather information, let me know.
