I'll confirm this problem in gutsy. I upgraded to Hoary, and this problem presented. I upgraded then to Gutsy, hoping that it would disappear, but alas...

Sorry I didn't note the version of wmaker along the way. But right now i'm at:

brock@vader:~$ WindowMaker --version
Window Maker 0.92.0
brock@vader:~$ uname -a
Linux vader 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux
brock@vader:~$
running Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10
brock@vader:~$ dpkg -l |grep wmaker
ii wmaker 0.92.0-6.1 NeXTSTEP-like window manager for X
ii wmakerconf 2.11-5 GTK+ based configuration tool for Window Mak
ii wmakerconf-data 0.90.0.0-3 Data files for wmakerconf, a configuration t
brock@vader:~$

A fix on this would be great. I've switched back to openbox because this feature is essential, but would love to find my way back to wmaker. Rumors say that wmaker is not being very assiduously maintained -- is it so?

Same here.
I'm running Gutsy with WindwoMaker version 0.92.0 on a PowerMac G4.
Is there some fix?

A quick workaround / fix for this:
- Install wmakerconf
- start wmakerconf
- go to 'shortcuts'
- look for 'switch input focus to the next window'
- set mod1-tab as shortcut

the problem is in wmakerconf or WPrefs. When capturing the shortcuts when Alt is used the program assignes Mod1 and Mod2 to the shortcut.
Only Mod1 should be selected

You don't need to install wmakerprefs unless you use it.

In WPrefs.app,
go to "Keyboard Shortcut Preferences" tab,
set "Focus next window" key to "Alt-tab"
set "Focus previous window" to "Ctrl-tab"

that should do the trick

This works in both Hardy and Interpid. Somebody probably fixed default config file in newer package versions.
