Do you have libavcodec-extra installed as suggested by the package?

The description of winff says:
For most presets to work, it is necessary to have the unstripped version of the libavcodec package, which can be obtained by installing libavcodec-extra as suggested by this package. It might be necessary to enable additional repositories to find that package.

Interestingly here¹ you can see that all the presets shipped with Winff should actually work. Which preset are you using?

Can you please copy/paste the complete terminal output that ffmpeg creates in a failure that you experience?

I've just tried with some different media and it's still not working.
However i also tried with a fresh install of ubuntu mate into a vmware machine and that is working fine - so very odd.

In Winff version 1.3.5-6 we replaced libvo_aacenc by aac. What happens if you hit the "Restore defaults" menu item the "Edit" tab?

sweet - restore defaults did the trick. It's happily munching trough some files now.

Thank you for your help with this and a brilliantly powerfuly and simple piece of software
