Bug Description

Hi,

on ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 3.13.0-93 everything with the screen resolution is fine. (beneath some undeterministic flickering at the startup..)

On ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 4.2.0-42 the screen resolution is not working properly.
It is too big. One could barely log in (because one could not click on the preferred user to log in, because it is not visible on the screen).

Also on Ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.4.0-21, and "try ubuntu live"-mode, the screen resolution is not working properly in the same manner.

Some testing showed that kernel 3.13 is using:
dmesg | egrep 'drm|radeon'
[drm] Initialized radeon 2.36.0 20080528 for 0000:02:00.0 on minor 0
which is ok.

while ubuntu 14.04 at kernel 4.2 is using:
[drm] Initialized radeon 2.43.0 20080528 for 0000:02:00.0 on minor 0

and ubuntu 16.04 at live mode, at kernel 4.4.0-21 is also using:
[drm] Initialized radeon 2.43.0 20080528 for 0000:02:00.0 on minor 0

On the failing kernels 4.2 and 4.4 xrandr says:
xrandr --prop
        scaling mode: None
supported: None, Full, Center, Full aspect

*** while on kernel 3.13 and radeon 2.36.0 there is no output of: "scaling mode: None" ***

lspci -nn | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV515 PRO [Radeon X1300/X1550 Series] [1002:7142]

if further logs are needed please tell me.

I tested also kernel 3.16.0-77 from
linux-headers-generic-lts-utopic

and the problem starts from this kernel number also.
Here radeon 2.39 is in use.
[drm] Initialized radeon 2.39.0 20080528 for 0000:02:00.0 on minor 0

same situation with too big screen resolution but no message about the: "no scaling mode" in xrandr --prop

LinuxFreak, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please run the following command once from a terminal by ensuring you have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information:
apport-collect 1614442

When reporting xorg related bugs in the future, please do so via the above method. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Hi Christopher,

Sorry for the late response, i just read your email.
The last correct functioning kernel is /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-95-generic

I did apport-collect for the kernel:
Linux linux-desktop 4.2.0-42-generic #49~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 29 20:22:11 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I found out that the problem occurs first at kernel image /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-77-generic
(Maybe also earlier)
Should i do apport-collect for that kernel loaded too?

regards

I did an update to kernel 4.4.0-36-generic #55~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 12 11:49:30 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The same login screen problems are here.
The desktop at resolution 1920x1080 is not rendered correctly. It appears bigger then the LCD-monitor.
(Once logged in, the lower resolution 1600x1900 works fine for the desktop.)

regards

PS: I stumbled at this problem with an new ubuntu 16.04 LTS DVD. After i could not fix this i switched back to the 14.04 LTS.

LinuxFreak, there is no need to further apport-collect unless specifically requested to do so.

Despite this, in order to allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue, at your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D ? Please keep in mind the following:
1) The one to test is at the very top line at the top of the page (not the daily folder).
2) The release names are irrelevant.
3) The folder time stamps aren't indicative of when the kernel actually was released upstream.
4) Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may:
1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there.
2) Backup, or clone the primary install.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Also, you don't need to apport-collect further unless specifically requested to do so.

It is most helpful that after testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, you mark this report Status Confirmed.

Lastly, to keep this issue relevant to upstream, please continue to test the latest mainline kernel as it becomes available.

Thank you for your help.
