Bug Description

I cannot do a shutdown of the system. It never turns off my computer.

If I track the shutdown process, it ends with:
System: Power down

And then nothing happends except for the internal fans normally speeds up, but it does not turn off the PC.

I can do a reboot without problems.

I tried the dev kernel version 4.8.0 (amd64) but it did not solve the issue.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of a regression, and when this regression was introduced. If this is a regression, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that introduced the problem.

I installed this Laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 right about when it was released, and it has been patches regularly, and it has never been able to shutdown, hibernate or standby.

I have not had any former version of Ubuntu installed on it.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.8 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I tried the 4.8.0 rc5 kernel.

I had to use recovery mode to get it to boot. I was able to resume every step to get it running, but I could not boot automatically.

The shutdown function still did not work.

Brian Knutsson, could you please provide a log of the shutdown following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSystemCrash ?

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for taking the time. What log exactly do you want?

I just started working for the first time ever.

Not sure if it is a kernel upgrade that did the trick, but it is now running the following kernel:
Linux hostname 4.4.0-38-generic #57-Ubuntu SMP Tue Sep 6 15:42:33 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Suspend works, and shutdown works! :)

Brian Knutsson, hibernate is a different issue, for a different report. Please file a new one if you would like it addressed.

Well something was fixed. I have had this laptop for 6 months, and it NEVER worked, so someone did something.
