Bug Description

Binary package hint: postgresql-8.2

Hi all,

I'm having a strange problem while I try to install Postgresql 8.2.

After I issue
apt-get install postgresql-8.2
I get

Creating new cluster (configuration: /etc/postgresql/8.2/main, data: /var/lib/postgresql/8.2/main)...
Moving configuration file /var/lib/postgresql/8.2/main/postgresql.conf to /etc/postgresql/8.2/main...
Moving configuration file /var/lib/postgresql/8.2/main/pg_hba.conf to /etc/postgresql/8.2/main...
Moving configuration file /var/lib/postgresql/8.2/main/pg_ident.conf to /etc/postgresql/8.2/main...
Configuring postgresql.conf to use port 5432...
 * Starting PostgreSQL 8.2 database server
* Error: Could not create log file /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-8.2-main.log

if I lool in /var/log/postgresql/
the "postgresql-8.2-main.log" file exists and is owned by postgres user and group.

I'm unable to make Postgres start. I get the same error (* Error: Could not create log file /var/log/postgresql/postgresql-8.2-main.log).

I tried to remove the package (with --purge) and reinstall it again without succes.
P.S: I had some problem with perl and local setting (warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C")).

Thanks
Ibrahim

I'm using a new installed gutsy 7.10 server installation.

Thanks again.

Hi to you All,

I continued to make my debug about this problem and I found the the access permissions on the /var and the /var/log didn't permit any kind of access for "other". I looked on my other server and set the access permissions as on that. The problem disappeared!
I'm sorry if I created a useless bug post.
I hope this may help some one.

Thanks

Ibrahim
