upload_image fails with glance v2

With glance v2 image_transfer.upload_image fails with various errors:

ImageTransferException: Error occurred while writing image: 2f46e30b-0e86-4b82-9349-3d6c0ef2b0c8
2016-08-04 17:20:10.019 TRACE oslo_messaging.rpc.dispatcher Cause: Unable to set 'vmware_image_version' to '1'. Reason: 1 is not of type u'string'

If we remove vmware_image_version from the meta-data, upload fails with:
