Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Electric Six is the most exciting band to come tumbling out of Detroit since Kiss. Sporting grimy leisure suits and hilarious stage names (the guitarists are known only as Surge Joebot and the Rock and Roll Indian), the ragtag group comes up with a deliriously catchy disco trash sound on its smart, hyperactive debut. Studio 54 horns mingle anxiously with AC/DC-influenced garage riffs, while frontman Dick Valentine rants maniacally over jerky, suggestive punk-funk songs like "Gay Bar" and "I'm the Bomb." Plus, rumor suggests that single "Danger! High Voltage" features the White Stripes' Jack White on backing vocals and, less plausibly, Bill Clinton on saxophone. How cool is that? Very. --Aidin Vaziri

Product Description
Detroit's Electric Six splice punk, new wave, disco, and arena rock into a total entertainment solution for the new breed of rock n' roller. 'This single is...pure driving disco-rock, complete with a new wave saxophone solo and ridiculous lyrics. Easily one of the best rock songs of the past year' - NY Times. 'Hold on, have the White Stripes gone Studio 54?' XL Records. 2003.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great., June 15, 2004
By Andrew J Sexton (Phoenix, AZ)
I saw these guys perform at Coachella, and their live show flat-out rocks. I was so impressed I bought the album as soon as I got home. The record is creative at first, but wears thin pretty quickly. Eventually the lead singer's constant flip flop between an over-the-top Robert Plant imitation and a weird falsetto gets annoying, and the songs all bleed into one sound.
A couple stand outs (Danger! High Voltage! and Gay Bar) are catchy, but not enough to support the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars You must obey the dance commader..., May 20, 2004
By B. Miller "Brandon Miller" (Big Bear City, CA United States)
(REAL NAME)
Every song on this album has a reference to fire and dancing, yet there is an unfathomable genius to Fire. The first track, "Dance Commander" makes you wanna do just that: Dance like a f*cking madman and play the air guitar. The rest of the album lives up to the kickass beginning. From the hard-rockin' songs (She's White, Naked Pictures) to the disco rock songs (Electric Demons In Love, I'm The Bomb, Danger! High Voltage) to the 80s synthesizer-driven beauty (Synthesizer) these guys rock every genre they touch on. It's one of my favorite albums ever and I'm sure people with a thing for disco or indie rock or just some fun stuff to dance to will like it also.

4.0 out of 5 stars cool retro feel, December 23, 2004
By notaste77 "Jay" (NYC)
Anyone interested in some over the top, cheezy synth rock will enjoy this disc. Is this a ground-breaking record? No. Is it fun to listen to and worth a few bucks? I think so. It won't change your life but you will shake your rump. And someone needs to tell the Amazon reviewer that Kiss is not from Detroit.

At first, I thought there was a character that was making it freeze, but then when I pasted in here, I see that the text is enormous. So, rather than it being a single character, it's probably some kind of overflow.

It seems that the behavior should be to warn the user that his/her input is too big.

Try again, and wait a few seconds (or a few minutes) to see if pidgin really crash or just freezes for a while.

Hmm. It worked for me. I wonder if the string length was longer because of rich text or the like.

So, I went to an item on Amazon and (Select All + Copy)'d and pasted into the text window (which is probably what I originally accidentally did).

It's been sitting for about 5 minutes and has yet to paste the text or do anything else of its own accord. I pasted the same text into Firefox, and appeared instantaneously.

Is there a way to see what's on the clipboard without having to paste into a writeable field?

I could not determine anything useful. When copying the text, it appears to go onto the clipboard as plain text. I also tried pasting into OpenOffice Writer using both the regular paste function as well as Edit > Paste Special. Paste Special should show the formats which the content of the clipboard can pasted, and only plain text is listed.

So this is only affecting me? I'm the only one who can crash Pidgin by copying and pasting the contents of an Amazon.com page? Odd. I'm not using anything that's not from the Ubuntu repos.

I tried to reproduce this again using a different setup. Previously, I was using Ubuntu i686 on a Sempron 2800+ with 512 MB of RAM. I just tried it on a much newer machine--X2 6000+ and 8 GB of RAM on amd64--and the bug is still there.

All I had to do was go to an Amazon item page, hit Ctrl+A to select all of the text on the page, then copy and paste it into a Pidgin conversation. Compiz helped me a little bit this time in realizing that Pidgin is crashing/looping/not working when it made it black and white.

There was nothing in the stack trace. Could this because pidgin doesn't actually segfault/crash? It goes into an infinite loop, I think, and can only be kill'd or force-quitted by the window manager.

Here's another thing I discovered: if I "Paste as plain text", it works fine. It is regular Paste that causes this behavior.

I have a theory: does the display widget that Pidgin uses for entry/display attempt to fetch remote images? I know it will keep <a>, <b>, and <i> tags in the pasted text if it was HTML. Perhaps that's the problem, then: that Pidgin tries to render of some of the images or block-level HTML in the pasted text and fails while doing so.
