Bug Description

I have one sort of typical problem, and one very strange problem, both related to the audio.
First the typical one, because, clearly, the strange one is the headlining act here.

Typical kind of problem: My system keeps changing from audio line out, to hdmi out as the default choice, and I have to keep moving it back by hand from systemsettings. It seems to be related to squeezelite, but am not sure.

Strange problem: After updating to 16.04, my microphone transmits only a strange, helium inflected cartoon voice when I speak. This strange transmission works with arecord or ffmpeg from command line, and with skype testing service. The latter convinces me that it is not a recording issue, but really a sound capture issue. Pulseaudio will not allow me to select my external microphone jack, though there is a microphone plugged in. It appears to use my webcam (logitech C310) mic. There was no such problem last week under 14.04. I cannot think of any other tests to perform. If it were allowed, I would upload a short recording of my voice, primarily for your amusement.

A few details:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release: 16.04

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1610293/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Similar problems, I have observed in Ubuntu 14.04, after upgrade to kernel 3.16, unchanged version of pulseaudio. Perhaps it is connected with a timer, or other changes in the kernel, and possibly in snd_usb_audio driver.

Logitech, Inc. Webcam C270, skype test service, audacity, sflphone

Ubuntu 14.04 3.13 kernel all work
Ubuntu 14.04 3.16 and higher kernel NOT work (high frequency voice, cartoon voice)
Ubuntu 16.04 NOT work (high frequency voice, cartoon voice) .

affects: ubuntu → linux-meta (Ubuntu)

Sounds like and issue with PulseAudio, definitely not with linux-meta package. Reassigning.

Ok, there is 2 different problems here in the original report.

Firstly, could you please run apport-collect 1610293 in a terminal, so more information can be retrieved about your hardware.

Secondly, for the HDMI problem, could you please get a log from PulseAudio, as explained here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log. If you don't know what causes the switching of outputs, try and take note of when it happens, and then determine what you were doing when it happened.

Thanks.
