Colours are shown incorrectly for any displayed image

Bug Description

When I open any jpg or png image in eog, the colours are shown incorrectly, as if only a subset of the full colour palette is being displayed. This looks like a 'posterisation' effect. SVG images with embedded pngs or jpgs seem to display correctly. jpg images from various different sources all suffer the same problem. Shotwell viewer shows the same image correctly.

Ubuntu 16.04 64bit
eog 3.18.2-1ubuntu1

Thank you for your bug report. That could be an issue similar to bug #938751
What's the output of "xprop -root | grep ICC_PROFILE"?
Does "xprop -root -remove _ICC_PROFILE" resolves the issue?

Changed in eog (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

Yes I think you are right, same bug.

The thing is, I do actually need colour profiles because I calibrate my monitors, and Shotwell does actually display correctly. So removing the profiles isn't an option for me, and if I want to quickly preview an image or look through photos, eog is just a bit easier that Shotwell.
