Bug Description

I get these strange and worrying errors:

[ 185.714463] ecryptfs_decrypt_page: Error attempting to read lower page; rc = [-4]
[ 185.714482] ecryptfs_readpage: Error decrypting page; rc = [-4]
[ 186.716177] ecryptfs_encrypt_page: Error attempting to write lower page; rc = [-4]
[ 186.716199] ecryptfs_write_end: Error encrypting page (upper index [0x000000000000011e])

The system seems to freeze for a second and then continues.

Hi,

Could you offer more information about how you mount eCryptfs something like that and more errors info?

As of the update to 17.04, this bug affects me too, and it causes the system to fail. Not sure what's going on but Chromium crashes, other processes can't exit unless killed, and on shutdown I see messages of the form "ecryptfs_encrypt_page: Error attempting to write lower page" in the console. Happens after an hour or a few hours of uptime.

Similar problem here with a fresh install of Ubuntu Gnome 17.04 (home encrypted) :

Sometimes I see this in syslog :
ecryptfs_decrypt_page: Error attempting to read lower page; rc = [-4]
ecryptfs_readpage: Error decrypting page; rc = [-4]
I don't know how to reproduce it.

Kernel 4.10.0-20-generic
ecryptfs-utils version 111-0ubuntu4 (zesty)
SSD is OK according to S.M.A.R.T.

I had some complete freeze, but I'm not sure if they are linked to these events.
