Bug Description

My Toshiba Tecra W50A runs a dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 18. This problem also existed when I dual-booted Windows 8.1 / Linux Mint 17.3.

Upon every boot, the grub menu is unresponsive for a few seconds before allowing input. That is, when the grub menu is displayed, pressing keys doesn't do anything until a few seconds later. This happens reliably on every boot.

1) System info: Linux Mint 18
   $ uname -a
   Linux clem-w50-mint 4.4.0-21-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 18 18:33:37 UTC 2016 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

2) To reproduce: Boot the computer

3) What happened: Grub menu is shown, but pressing keyboard keys doesn't do anything until a few seconds later.

4) What you expected to happen instead: Keys should be immediately responsive after grub menu is shown.

5) Problem always happens.

What extra information can I provide? Here's my /etc/default/grub (it was not edited):

    $ cat /etc/default/grub
    # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
    # /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
    # For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
    # info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
    GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

Same behavior, however I'm single booting KDE Neon (ubuntu 16.04) with grub set to be allways shown. If I keep the the default GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT, grub menu wont show, but it takes unusualy long before the boot starts. Toshiba Portege Z30t

Same on Kubuntu 20.10 and Lenovo Legion 5 / AMD / nvidia + uefi + "secure boot support"=enabled. The system was installed in this config.

The issue was resolved by/after the following actions:
- setting admin password in uefi
- disabling "secure boot support"

The problem remains resolved after enabling "secure boot support" back.
