gnome-session and startkde fail after upgrade to 7.10 (due to /bin/dash)

Bug Description

After upgrade from Ubuntu 7.04 (x86) to Ubuntu 7.10, gnome-session and startkde fail to start (.xsession-errors states that the start failed, but gives no further indication on why they do so) and only a xterminal and no window manager is started after log-in to the GUI.

There were already bugs reported regarding this, but none of the comments turned out to be of much help. A colleague of mine guessed right in that the change of the system (bourne) shell to dash caused gnome-session and startkde to fail. Indeed after linking /bin/bash to /bin/sh, startkde works just fine again (I haven't tried gnome-session yet).
