Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.22-14-386

I am running gutsy on a Dell Latitude D830 and after a few hours my ethernet card stops working. All data transfer stops. I have tried unloading/reloading the module (tg3) but that does not work. However, if I hibernate the machine, when it comes back up it works again for a few hours and then stops. I have been running gutsy for a few months now and this only started happening recently (within the past month).

The Hardy Heron Alpha2 release will be coming out soon. It will have an updated version of the kernel. It would be great if you could test with this new release and verify if this issue still exists. I'll be sure to update this report when Alpha2 is available. Thanks!

I'm opened a new task against the actively developed kernel. However, I'm closing the report against linux-source-2.6.22 as it does not meet the criteria for a stable release update. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . Thanks!

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!

Sorry I have been away for the past month and havent had a chance to test my wired connection until now but it still seems to be happening with the latest updates, however it takes longer to happen. While it used to drop the connection within a few hours now it seems to keep it for a few days (2-3) before it stops working.

Hi Steven,

Can you attach your dmesg output after this happens. Also, just curious if you'd be willing to confirm this issue with the latest Alpha release for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I am nit sure if this the same problem. I am running Intrepid Beta and have a strange problem with the Broadcom Chipset BCM5754 using the tg3 driver. I can ping the external network and perform all function from the machine to others in the network. But nobody can ping this machine from outside. Its asif there was a firewall blocking network access to my machine. But I have no firewall running and have confirmed this by using a different network card (intel 100o Pro) and that works fine. This beats me that the tg3 module in 2.6.27 kernel ,might be buggy. Let me know if i need to provide more info.

P.S iam using athe Dell Precison 380 that comes with an onboard Broadcom chipset (BCm5754)

Hi Hussam,

It seems you have a slightly different bug than what was originally reported here so it would probably be best if you opened a new bug report for now. Thanks.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell vostro 3500 and I found that my eth0 stops working randomly after reboot. ifconfig lists it. But neither NetworkManager nor wicd can get the card to work (in DHCP). It some times work fine. But other times it is as if the card doesnt exist at all.

$ dmesg | grep eth
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

This has been such a deeply frustrating problem for me, affecting my productivity so much.. please help.
