Bug Description

Binary package hint: gimp

The "Save A Copy" screen is blank. Will attach a screen shot.

-- Ubuntu 7.10
-- Gimp 2.4.0-rc3

I'm unsure what triggered the problem and will attempt to reproduce it.

Standard "Save As" screen appears the same way. All other pop-up screens and dialogs appear to be fine.

Thanks for your report, does the same happens if you disable the visual effects?, Which video card do you have? thanks.

It appears to be an upstream problem. I spoke with 2 other people with the same issue in #gimp and one person was running OS X. For that reason, it appears not to be related to the window decorator or X setup.

The problem, since creating this ticket, seems to be intermittent. The symptoms will continue to occur regardless of application restarts and then all of a sudden, they disappear only to re-appear at a later time.

As well, it appears to be related to saving the document to another folder other than the default. I haven't 100% confirmed this and will provide as much information as I can the next time the bug pops up. Is there any particular information you'd like me to gather?

Andrew/Juraj,

Can you provide the following information?

Video Card Model
Driver (e.g., open source/closed source proprietary)
Are you running Compiz?

I'll create the upstream ticket since it's occurring for at least one person in Hardy.

Thanks,
Dave

If you could also provide the gimp version number that you have, that would be great.

Driver: xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.12-17.36
Compiz: No

What did i do when it happened?:

1. Drag file "1.png" from nautilus to gimp to open it
2. Drag file "2.png" from nautilus to gimp to open it
3. Copy&paste content of file "2.png" to file "1.png" and "save as" (this still works)
4. Close file "2.png"
5. Drag file "3.png" from nautilus to gimp to open it
6. Revert changes of file "1.png" so it's back to it's original state
7. 3. Copy&paste content of file "3.png" to file "1.png"
8. Try to "save as"

The error occurs after step 8. with the same result as described by the reporter of this bug

Workaround:

After closing file "1.png" and reopening it "save as" works again

Was able to reproduce it two times but further tries couldn't reproduce this behaviour, so it doesn't always happen.

I can also confirm this in Hardy 8.04. Gimp version 2.4.5

Kernel: 2.6.24-16-generic
Video: nVida GeForce 8600M GT
Driver: 169.12
Compiz running: Yes

Same behavior with .gif files, using "Save As ...". Attached screen-grab to better demonstrate this issue. This appears to be a regression, as never encountered this issue under Gutsy and Feisty running Gimp 2.3

I just got this bug tonight as well. I didn't do anything related to what some of the other people previously had to do to trigger it. For me, it just started during one save.

I purged gimp and related packages and re-installed. I wiped ~/.gimp-2.4. Neither helped.

The bug now happens *every* time I try and save a file (any file). The strange thing is, it doesn't freeze or lock up Gimp. It's almost like the buttons and things are still there and responding to my input (I can still sort of use it because I know where some buttons are), but the window just never refreshes again.

Another strange thing, I have a laptop which is in sync with my desktop as far as packages and versions are concerned (the laptop is a clone of the desktop), but the laptop isn't having this problem.

Talk about a heisenbug.

Driver: Intel
Compiz: No (I'm not even using Gnome, I use Fluxbox)

I actually now switch to a laptop when I need Gimp. My desktop and
laptop actually use the same driver (both are onboard Intel GPUs), and
as I said above, the laptop isn't having this problem.

Happens to me too:

Video: Intel 945GM
Compiz: tested both with and without.

I'm glad I do most of my image manipulation with the Python Imaging Library these days, since this is maddening enough with my light usage.

The (blank) window does still respond to events, so it's possible to (blindly) type in a filename. Symptoms remind me of an issue I had with wxWidgets some time ago, in which I was accidentally removing paint handlers from a dialog before that dialog had been destroyed.

Hope this gets fixed. I'm kind of worried that it's low priority, since it's exactly the kind of icky user experience quirk that would scare users away.

It occurs here too, in Debian Lenny (version 2.4.7) and in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.2 (version 2.4.5).
My videoboard is ATI but I don't have the driver installed. No error is shown in the terminal, and no program out from the repositories are installed.

A image showing the bug in Lenny and Hardy is attached.

I have the same issue in Hardy using Gimp 2.4.5. Usually after the first successful "Save as copy..." is when I get the blank file chooser dialogue.
I'll be upgrading to 9.04 in a few days - has anyone had this problem in the beta?

Same issue here too, with Hardy, kernel 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 21:47:28 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux, Gimp 2.4.6.

After loading the program, the first time I "Save as" always works fine. It's after I save one file, and try to "Save as" again that I get the blank file chooser dialogue.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The package your reporting is updated and the issue should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.
