Update Manager Could Not Initialize the Package Information

Attempted to update to Gutsy, but had to terminate. Now I get the following error when attempting to run the Update Manager.

Could not initialize the package information

A unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Read error - read (5 Input/output error), E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

Addition to the last post as I could not figure out how to attach multiple files...

I did a regular update, in which ONE OF THE PACKAGES could not be downloaded (opera browser).
All the other packages were installed successfully.

After this I get the following message from Synaptic and from apt-get:

"sudo apt-cache clean" gave:
E: Read error - read (5: Input/output error)

Leon - please report a new bug, using ubuntu-bug update-manager, rather than reopening an old one.
