Bug Description

Bluetooth does not work. In settings it is set to ON but the visibility option is greyed out. Since install of elementary OS freya from Windows 10, I have not been able to use Bluetooth. My PC is HP 15-r201ne, it has a Realtek card - can't remember the command for getting the exact model.

Maybe this output will help diagnosing the problem,

lsusb; dmesg | grep -i bluetooth; dmesg | grep -i firmware; rfkill list all; lsmod | grep bluetooth; hciconfig -a; uname -a

For kernel 3.19 that you have I made a fix. Install DKMS by

sudo apt-get install dkms

and install these debs:

https://launchpad.net/~hanipouspilot/+archive/ubuntu/rtlwifi/+files/rtlwifi-new-dkms_0.9~wily_all.deb

https://launchpad.net/~hanipouspilot/+archive/ubuntu/rtlwifi/+files/rtl8723au-bt-dkms_0.7.1_all.deb

and the BT shuold start working.

For kernels 4.2+ it is supposed to be supported out of the box. But this is not the case as far as I see.

Thanks Pilot6 (hanipouspilot) for the support. I did as you suggested above.

dkms was already installed so I moved to install those 2 debs.

The bt deb installed with no problems.
The rtlwifi deb could not install with the software center as it told me that a later version is already installed. So I went to terminal and installed from there. The process began and finished but I noticed mid-way that it said that it could not create module for kernel 3.19 but instead created for 4.20 and all the other kernels I have previously booted.

Funny enough, after finishing the installation, I tested bluetooth manually by toggling from settings: still no effect so I rebooted. Grub booted me straight from 3.19 to 4.20 which I found weird since I had been using 3.19. Anyways tested BT manually, still no change. And kernel 4.20(IDK whether it is only my setup or what) has broken wifi. So I have gone back to a lower version kernel so I can get wifi back.

Could there be another alternative? I am out of my wits here!

Thanks again for the help Pilot6

Oh, I gave you a link for a wrong deb, that is for 4.2.

Remove the old one and install this

https://launchpad.net/~hanipouspilot/+archive/ubuntu/rtlwifi/+files/rtlwifi-new-dkms_0.5_all.deb

And I suggest removing kernel 4.2, since grub with always boot with the latest kernel.

I can't help. This device is officially supported by new kernels. I know that BT does not seem to work. I do not have a device to test.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.7 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury)

I have booted just kernels 3.19 up to 4.2, Bluetooth has not worked on any so far.

Tried to install the latest 4.7 kernel yesterday but it did not install some modules but finished the process. Rebooted but 4.7 could not boot because of some errors (probably because one of UUID drive was mismatched). Will try later to re-install 4.7 but at the moment am using 3.19 which is stable but without BT.

Thanks for the suppport.

Noob here. TLP battery saver install seemed to be largely the cause of this problem. Removing it fixes this for good.

Can you confirm that the BT works without any dkms modules?
I do not have the hardwae and need to know if the new kernels really work with it.

Hi Pilot6. Not sure how to check whether dkms is installed but I ran below command

bcmwl, 6.30.223.248+bdcom, 4.4.0-28-generic, x86_64: installed

Let me know if you need any more tests.
