Rhythmbox does not play mms stream unless started with a terminal

Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I start Rhythmbox from the Application menu or from a launcher as an application (without terminal), then it does not play an MMS stream at http://202.7.7.90/rnz-cfm (or one or two others that I tried). It pops up a dialog box saying "Couldn't start playback. Unknown playback error"

It does play the other internet radio stations supplied as standard with Ubuntu.

If I start Rhythmbox from a terminal window, or from a panel launcher as an 'Application in Terminal', then it does play the stream correctly. It also prints the following in the terminal window "JACK tmpdir identified as [/dev/shm]".

How can a capture the debug output from Rhythmbox without having a terminal?

Gutsy, updated 2007-11-01
libmms0 0.3-5ubuntu2
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.5-4ubuntu1

Perhaps just a problem with the bad plugin?

Thank you for your report. This does not appear to be a bug reportand we are closing it. That works fine for me i can listen to the radio station with rhythmbox and it's probably something broken in your codecs. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise your question in the support tracker. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu

This problem still exists in Hardy -- please re-open the issue. I will rephrase it as a bug report.

1. Start Rhythmbox from Menu > Applications > Sound and Video > Rhythmbox Music Player
2. Add a new radio station 'http://202.7.7.90/rnz-cfm'
3. Press play.
4. Rhythmbox responds with a dialog box 'Couldn't start playback. Unknown playback error'.
5. I expected Rhythmbox to play the audio stream
6. Alternatively, Rhythmbox could give a more helpful message.

Now, Rhythmbox actually CAN play this stream:

1. Start a terminal
2. Type Rhythmbox
3. Select the new radio station.
4. Press play
5. It plays.

Therefore, there is something strange happening in Rhythmbox, or in the way Rhythmbox starts from the menu option.

Thank you
Stephen
