First: it is VERY hard to recompile kernel in Ubuntu :( I can not find proper information about this.
I done (i do not know why, but it is written in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild, so i do it):
cd /usr/src/
sudo apt-get install linux-kernel-devel fakeroot kernel-wedge kernel-package
sudo apt-get build-dep linux-source
apt-get source linux-source
then i receive linux-source-2.6.22.tar.bz2
i untar it (using mc) and go to linux-source-2.6.22.
i do make clean, then make menuconfig:
make menuconfig

It is a GREAT problem, if i can not recompile kernel!!!
Also: where i can find information how-to rebuild kernel with some patch?
In Gentoo it is easy to do, but in Ubuntu unfortunately it is hard.
I think may be it is problem fo ncurces, but:
sudo apt-get install libncurses5
[sudo] password for <username>:
